Construction on the Foster Avenue Extension and Arcata Rails with Trails construction projects began on Wednesday, April 15. Construction for both projects will take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. Both projects are anticipated to be completed by October 15, weather permitting. Natural Resources Maintenance Crew Leader Dennis Houghton gives a free talk on the ins and outs of forest trail design and construction from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at the Redwood Acres Turf Room in Eureka. Houghton will cover design principles and processes, hand-built construction procedures, trail building tools and terminology. Everyone from the community is invited to attend. This presentation is sponsored by the Volunteer Center of the Redwoods (VCOR) and RSVP, a program of the Area 1 Agency on Aging. It is supported by the County of Humboldt’s Natural Resource Division, and the Humboldt Trail Stewards.
Arcata’s revised citywide smoking ban goes into effect on Friday, April 17, 2015. The revised ban prohibits smoking within city limits unless actively passing through to another destination. A total smoking ban exists in the Plaza Area, including all outer perimeter sidewalks, at the Arcata Intermodal Transit Facility at 501 9th Street and at most City parks where everyone, including people who are actively passing through, cannot smoke.
