Arcata's Community Forest is comprised of 793 acres. Over a 50 year period, 622 acres were obtained in several purchases. This acquisition process culminated in the dedication of the Community Forest in 1955. In November 2006, the 171 acre Sunny Brae Forest was added to the Community Forest. The City also owns and manages the 1,321 acre Jacoby Creek Forest. The City owns a total of 2,100 acres of forest land.

The forest land was used as a source for the municipal water supply until 1964. Since then it has served many functions including recreation, education, sustainable timber harvesting, and wildlife habitat. The forest serves as the headwaters of many of Arcata's urban streams.
In 1979, the citizens of Arcata passed the "Forest Management and Parkland Initiative." The intent of the legislation was to develop a responsible and ecologically sensitive long-term forest management program which would provide revenues for the acquisition and development of City parkland.
Forest management is guided by a multi-resource management plan. The objectives are:
-
To harvest timber on a sustainable basis
-
Maintain and enhance the integrity of the watershed, wildlife, fisheries, and plant resources
-
Generate revenues for the acquisition and development of recreational facilities in the city
-
In addition, the community forest is managed to provide forest recreational and educational opportunities for the community.
The Arcata Community/Jacoby Creek Forests were certified as sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in 1998.
